Saturday was game day! The Rwandan National team had a World Cup Qualifier against Egypt last Saturday. For most nations (besides the US) soccer is a HUGE deal! (Well, they call it football...) And the same goes for Rwanda. In fact, there were so many people outside the stadium trying to get in that it took my friends and I about 45 minutes to get through all the security checks. And its also so big that the President of Rwanda was expected to be there, thus needing a lot of extra security measures. (Yes, I got patted down before going in, but it was by a woman, luckily!) Once we got in though, it was amazing. I had met one of the footballers on the airplane from Brussels and he had explained when the game was. So I decided to go with some friends and was so glad. The stadium is about the same size as Autzen (maybe without the extra high seats) and there were probably around 25,000 people there. And similar to the US people where colors and get crazy, but also, the HUGE drums come out. And the horns! It went on the whole game. So loud and so much fun! The game was intense and I pretty much just focused on the field, as I can’t yet understand Kinyarwanda (the local language here) so I didn’t know what people were saying around me anyway. Rwanda ended up losing the game 1-0, but it was still a blast to be there and to experience it! Is it ok to be having this much fun?!?!
